The Ferrari organization was turned upside down with “The Palace revolt.” According to Carlo Chiti, Ferrari’s chief engineer at the time, Enzo Ferrari changed the ownership structure of his firm, Scuderia Ferrari, due to the legal wranglings following the fatal crash at the 1957 Mille Miglia race. As a result, this gave Ferrari’s wife, Laura more considerable sway than she had before, where her involvement in Scuderia’s business affairs caused friction with many of Ferrari’s key people. It all came to a head in November of 1961 when Bizzarrini, Chiti, and six others were terminated.
One of Ferrari’s greatest strengths was recognizing talent, and soon after, he promoted Mauro Forghieri, a very green but talented young engineer, to chief engineer. Forghieri worked closely with master coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti to complete Bizzarrini’s car, and the 250 GTO debuted in February of 1962 at Ferrari’s press conference.
