Last week’s story about Phoenix Art Museum’s virtual tour of its Legends of Speed exhibit prompted us to take a deeper dive into the photographer behind the stunning Ferrari image provided by the museum. That led us to Atlanta-based Bill Pack, who kindly shared his time to answer our questions about how he captured all 22 cars for the museum’s exhibit catalog.

Bill Pack combines his passion for fine art photography with rare cars from around the world. Trained as a commercial photographer at the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California, Bill has built a career combining his experience creating vivid, award-winning images of consumer products with a lifelong love of architecture and automotive design to develop an illumination technique: “Painting with Light.”

PAINTING with LIGHT

For Bill Pack, automobiles are not just a way to get from point A to B; they’re works of art. The Atlanta resident and graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, has been photographing collector vehicles for five years, but he has been shooting food, technology and modern autos for 20 years while working in advertising in San Francisco. Now, using an innovative form of photography called painting with light, Pack brings people’s prized automotive collections to life through his stunning photographs

In 2018 we introduced you to the incredible automotive photographer Bill Pack as he was trying to raise money though his Kickstarter campaign for his first book. Fast forward to a little over a year later and Bill successfully delivered the book in time for Christmas 2018 and has just been commissioned for his second book by the Phoenix Museum of Art. Admit it. Those who love cars, absolutely love car photography. Whether it is a picture of a vintage beauty or racing demon, automotive art can be breathtaking and we are addicted. Bill Pack is an automotive photographer in Atlanta, Georgia who studied at the iconic Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. His photography is influences by art and the strong graphic lines of automobiles with a focus on lighting, texture, and design. His move to shooting mostly classic cars started about a decade ago after years of shooting a wide range of subjects commercially. He approaches his subjects with a belief that every car has a story and in every story there is a narrative and a visual. You can get lost in design. Goodness, I do on a daily basis! When you yourself are creating or when you are admiring and looking at what someone else has created, it can really take you to another place in an instant. My romantic mind can be lost for hours on end. I find this inspiration in so many places. One such place is in vintage cars. They have always fascinated me. It started when I was  young and I would dream of owning a beautiful old car, in immaculate condition, more I believe for the ability to constantly look at the impeccable design and admire it every day than actually driving it, because back then, I was too young to drive. Of course now, that love is for both the drive and the design.
