The 2024 Indy 500 - An Unforgettable Day in Racing History
On this past Memorial Day weekend, Lionel and I were honored guests of Roger Penske and Team Penske at the electrifying 2024 Indy 500. Our collaboration on a bespoke book celebrating Penske’s 19 historic victories made this invitation particularly special and gratifying.
Despite my familiarity with the track from various past projects, nothing could have prepared me for the visceral experience of the Indy 500 itself. With its rich traditions and vibrant atmosphere, it stands alongside events like the Kentucky Derby or the Army-Navy football game as a truly iconic American spectacle, drawing 340,000 fans who share a deep passion for racing.
The Start of a Spectacular Day
The race day kicked off with the resounding boom of a 6am cannon, signaling the gates were open. Moments later, a brilliant fireworks display lit up the morning sky, showering us with sparks in a thrilling wake-up call. The excitement continued as two parachutists landed dramatically, their feet alight with fireworks, capturing the awe of everyone watching.
Journey Through Racing Heritage
Our day progressed with a leisurely walk through Gasoline Alley and the bustling garages, soaking in the pre-race energy. A visit to the Penske hospitality tent was a proud moment, as we saw the bespoke book we produced—a detailed chronicle of Penske's 19 victories—prominently displayed.
Traditions of the 500
The day was steeped in tradition, from the march of bagpipes and drums parading the Borg-Warner Trophy around the track, accompanied by the Purdue Marching Band, to the moving presentation of the trophy, wreath, and the ceremonial bottle of milk. The parade of legends, featuring icons like Mark Andretti and my friend Lyn St. James, was deeply moving. The solemn taps played to honor fallen soldiers added a poignant note to the morning, followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem and a breathtaking flyover by the Thunderbirds. The singing of “Back Home Again in Indiana” swelled in the stands, stirring the hearts of all present.
A Dominant Start for Team Penske
Adding to the day's excitement, Team Penske achieved a front row lockout to start the race, setting a dominant tone for what was to become a historic day at the track.
The Thrill of the Race
Roger Penske himself gave the command to start the engines, igniting a chorus of cheers and roaring engines in anticipation. The race was thrilling, with Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden securing his second consecutive victory and delivering Penske's 20th win at the Indy 500. The post-race celebration saw Newgarden kissing the bricks, a cherished tradition after receiving the wreath and enjoying the victory milk.
Reflecting on an Unmatched Experience
The 2024 Indy 500 was more than a race; it was a grand celebration of automotive passion, a testament to enduring traditions, and a communal experience shared by hundreds of thousands. For Lionel and me, it reinforced the value of our work in capturing these profound moments. Leaving the track, the echoes of the day’s thrills were a vivid reminder that at the Indy 500, every moment is a chapter in a larger story of racing history.
